Short Story 3

For my short story 3 I chose the story "American History" by Judith Ortiz Cofer. To my suprisment this story was actually pretty good. It started out kind of boring, but then it quickly became interesting. I felt disappointed when I finished this book though, I didn't understand why they author didn't write more and it's almost like she didn't finish her story. The subject is American History. The theme was life in a poor neighborhood. I agree with the author. I think she was trying to reveal that life isn't always easy and kids get picked on.

This story is about a little Puerto Rico girl that is not very popular and get called "skinny bones" all the time and lives in an apartment building always looking down upon a house next to her paying attention to whom lives there and what they do in their lifestyle.

After a Jewish family moving out a white family moves in and she really pays attention to this one since the son, Eugene sits at the kitchen table for most of his time reading and this is something she enjoys to do in her free time. Later they become friends, but one day when he asks her to come over and study his parents refuse to let him be involved with her and that very same day president Kennedy is shot she was at school when it happened so they sent all the students home. The whole town is really heartbroken about it.

I thought this story was sad but also disappointing because I was looking forward to knowing how things turned up and turned out to be for everyone. I wanted to know how the boy reacted about his mom treating that girl(his friend). I wanted to know how she and her family turned out, if the mom was okay or not and this story did not end with any of these it just stopped all of a sudden and did not explain things very well.

I thought she showed how she felt about that girls lifestyle and how hard it must be by the way she showed sympathy towards the girl getting picked on.

A movie I liked would be saw. The theme is giving people a dose of their own medicine. the subject is they have to escape before time runs out.

Short story two(nonfiction)

For my nonfiction short story 2 I chose "When I Lay My Burden Down." by Maya Angelou. This story was short of confusing to me. From what I can understand this is a story about how it was to live in the older days with a African family and how they discipline.

The way they discipline their family seems really harsh to me. One thing that they do is their mom would tell them that "keeping clean is second next to god" and made them wash their selves every night. After they fell asleep the book said "she was famous for lifting up the covers and checking their feet for dirt" "for if they weren't clean enough for her she would grab the switch that she kept behind the door for emergencies and give the offender a burning." it was an interesting story.

I thought this was a harsher way of doing things and getting them done, but I guess you just have to see what works. I think maybe she wrote this because this is how she felt at home in her younger days, maybe this is what it was like for her and her brothers and sisters. This story kinda gets you thinking about how things use to be in the older days and how much better things have gotten for everyone. I think the reason she wrote this story is to show people that you should respect everyone not just a certain type of people. She wants you to she how everyone has feelings and not only some. I think to her cleanliness is a really big deal to the author.

The reason people like to read stories like this is because it's about someone Else's life and there are lots of people that are more interested in other peoples lives than they are their own. Some reason are because they are just nosey and other may just want to know how to handle a situation if they may come in contact with the same one as another. Stories like this show readers how other people have life and how they live it. It gives you an example of what others do in situations.
