Short Story 3

For my short story 3 I chose the story "American History" by Judith Ortiz Cofer. To my suprisment this story was actually pretty good. It started out kind of boring, but then it quickly became interesting. I felt disappointed when I finished this book though, I didn't understand why they author didn't write more and it's almost like she didn't finish her story. The subject is American History. The theme was life in a poor neighborhood. I agree with the author. I think she was trying to reveal that life isn't always easy and kids get picked on.

This story is about a little Puerto Rico girl that is not very popular and get called "skinny bones" all the time and lives in an apartment building always looking down upon a house next to her paying attention to whom lives there and what they do in their lifestyle.

After a Jewish family moving out a white family moves in and she really pays attention to this one since the son, Eugene sits at the kitchen table for most of his time reading and this is something she enjoys to do in her free time. Later they become friends, but one day when he asks her to come over and study his parents refuse to let him be involved with her and that very same day president Kennedy is shot she was at school when it happened so they sent all the students home. The whole town is really heartbroken about it.

I thought this story was sad but also disappointing because I was looking forward to knowing how things turned up and turned out to be for everyone. I wanted to know how the boy reacted about his mom treating that girl(his friend). I wanted to know how she and her family turned out, if the mom was okay or not and this story did not end with any of these it just stopped all of a sudden and did not explain things very well.

I thought she showed how she felt about that girls lifestyle and how hard it must be by the way she showed sympathy towards the girl getting picked on.

A movie I liked would be saw. The theme is giving people a dose of their own medicine. the subject is they have to escape before time runs out.

Short story two(nonfiction)

For my nonfiction short story 2 I chose "When I Lay My Burden Down." by Maya Angelou. This story was short of confusing to me. From what I can understand this is a story about how it was to live in the older days with a African family and how they discipline.

The way they discipline their family seems really harsh to me. One thing that they do is their mom would tell them that "keeping clean is second next to god" and made them wash their selves every night. After they fell asleep the book said "she was famous for lifting up the covers and checking their feet for dirt" "for if they weren't clean enough for her she would grab the switch that she kept behind the door for emergencies and give the offender a burning." it was an interesting story.

I thought this was a harsher way of doing things and getting them done, but I guess you just have to see what works. I think maybe she wrote this because this is how she felt at home in her younger days, maybe this is what it was like for her and her brothers and sisters. This story kinda gets you thinking about how things use to be in the older days and how much better things have gotten for everyone. I think the reason she wrote this story is to show people that you should respect everyone not just a certain type of people. She wants you to she how everyone has feelings and not only some. I think to her cleanliness is a really big deal to the author.

The reason people like to read stories like this is because it's about someone Else's life and there are lots of people that are more interested in other peoples lives than they are their own. Some reason are because they are just nosey and other may just want to know how to handle a situation if they may come in contact with the same one as another. Stories like this show readers how other people have life and how they live it. It gives you an example of what others do in situations.

Writing two Halloween(Nonfiction)

If I had to choose a favorite holiday I would probably have to go with Halloween. Halloween is a really great holiday in so many ways. The colors are beautiful; there are so much delicious things to eat. I love the sound of Halloween music and little kid’s laughter, there’s a huge variety of creative holiday costumes and then there’s all the things you can do with making Halloween art and everything just smells so darn good!

The reason it’s a beautiful holiday is, all of the leaves are beginning to fall and there are so many wonderful colors around. You see all the pumpkins around; everyone has baskets of mixed bright colored candy. Most of all you watch tons of little, or big, small, or tall, kids with their parents, but no matter what size they are, they all running around in these scary and funny costumes laughing and playing as they trick or treat.

What makes it a delicious holiday is all of the candy. They all taste so good and it doesn’t matter who you are, everyone loves candy. What I love most about Halloween is the nice hot homemade pumpkin pie! Pumpkin pie is my favorite kind of pie no matter what holiday it is; it’s good all year around. (On top of all of these great things to eat, there are the cookies and cupcakes.) The reason Halloween smells amazing to me is because there are so many smells around you like, pumpkin pie, candles, cookies, candy, and then there is always the crisp fall wind smells. The smell of pumpkin pie is like heaven; in the smell you get a hint of spice and a hint of sweet, together it’s very good its almost like your tasting a piece of heaven.

I think it’s a loud holiday because there are people of all ages running up to the doors of their neighbors. They ring the door bell or knock on the door and yell out “trick or treat!” There are tons of people that will dress up their babies to come and trick or treat. Then whenever you get home you have all these kids jumping off the walls and yelling from so much candy. It really looks like a big playground to me; everyone running around like hooligans!

It’s a very festive holiday; many families go out with their kids to a place called a pumpkin patch. A pumpkin patch is a huge field filled with big, medium, small and sometimes even baby pumpkins for families to pick out. Then you go back home after you’ve picked out a good pumpkin, after you take all out the seeds, sit down with your family and everyone takes turns carving it into a scary face or a happy face. After that you have a jack o’ lantern then just pop a candle in it and it’s ready to go!

These are the reason why I think Halloween is such a great holiday. Halloween to me is not really a dark holiday it’s more like a fun parting holiday and I wish there were more holidays like that, that just let you have a break, get fat on candy, and just have time to relax and let everything go. I wonder if there will be any new holidays in the future that are similar or like Halloween.

Writing One Autobiography

My name is Laurel Easton and I was born on September 5, 1991 in Atlanta, GA. I am 16 and will be 17 in less than a month. In late September of last year(When I was 15) I was walking with my friends in the hall at school, when a girl gave me a note and told me her friend wanted me to have it. Inside the piece of paper was a name that read Dustin with a cell phone number under it. Later that day I decided to try and call, but nobody answered. I then tried to text it and asked who it was. He replied back and said he thought I was really pretty and wanted to get to know me.

Hearing this made me think this was kind of strange, but I decided to keep on talking to him. I figured it couldn’t be that bad since he goes to my school he would have to be close to my age. Then on September 29, 2006, after talking to him for about a week he said he wanted to ask me something, but he wanted to talk about it in person. So later that day we met outside of the school and he asked me if I wanted to go out with him and go to the fair with him later that night.

Having feelings for him, I said yes and couldn’t wait until later to see him. We had a wonderful time and kept on talking. We were already falling for each other pretty hard. We continued to go out until that spring, after that we were on and off. Then on May 18, 2007 we had broken up for the last time and had mostly stopped talking.

That August his lung collapsed and he called me so immediately I rushed over to the hospital to see him. Staying with him and taking care of him until he left really brought us a lot closer together. Then in October his lung collapsed again, but this time he had to have surgery. After he got out of the hospital I helped take care of him.

We became more and closer after that and then in late February I got pregnant. I was so scared, I thought, “I’m so young, how will I be able to take care of a baby and still finish school?” I knew I was going to have the baby and not put it up for adoption and there was no way I was ever going to have an abortion. So I started getting the check-ups and prenatal vitamins that I needed in order to have a healthy baby. I was taking such good care of myself, I was eating everything I was supposed to and nothing I wasn’t supposed to. I was growing so close to this baby and loved it so much even though I didn’t even know it. I had always thought having a boy first would be nice but I knew I would be happy with a healthy baby no matter what the sex was, I was so excited and couldn't wait.

On July 7, 2008 I had my second ultrasound to find out the sex of the baby and to make sure I was having a healthy baby with all of its lungs, heart, organs that it was supposed to. When I got to the doctors office, I went in to have the ultrasound and found out that I was going to be having a beautiful baby girl. I hadn’t really given to much thought about names before, but I thought that the name Jayden Grace was so sweet. My family and friends we so excited to be having a new baby around. My due date was November 30, 2008, just a couple more months. I was 23 weeks exactly, 5 moths which was a little over half way there, when things stared going wrong.

I got up on Saturday, August 2, 2008 and wasn’t feeling very well at all. I was cramping, I had a head ache. The cramping wasn’t’ bad at all it just felt like some cramps did that I had before in the pregnancy ones that my doctor said was normal. I had to drive my sister to my aunt’s house so that she could babysit for her. On the way back home the cramps got so bad I could hardly drive, I didn’t know what to do. I tried to call my mom, but she didn’t answer the phone, I was almost home so I just tried to make it home and see if I would be okay.

Once I got home I went to use the bathroom. When I came out I went to get my mom to tell her what was going on but, I had to run back to the bathroom thinking I still had to go. Instead my water broke, then quickly after that I started bleeding, I was so scared I knew the worst that could happen was already in process. Once I got out of the bathroom my mom called the ambulance and I was rushed to the hospital. In the ambulance they asked me all of my information so that I wouldn’t have to wait once I got there I would go straight to a room. When I got there a bunch of doctors came in to talk to me about what was happening. Not long later Dustin came to stay with me and help me through this. The doctors told me they were going to check to see how I was doing and then probably give me an ultrasound to see how much fluid I’ve lost.

The doctor checked me, but she said she didn’t need the ultrasound anymore. It was too late, I was already 3 cm dilated and the worst was happening, I was in the process of having a miscarriage. I decided to moving things along faster and get medicine to just make it go quicker so that I wouldn’t get an infection in the process, since the outcome would be the same for the baby.

At 3:08 on August 3, 2008 I delivered her, she was born stillborn in the breach position. The doctors asked me if I would like to hold her so I did. This experience left me extremely heartbroken; I named her Jayden Grace Easton. She was perfect in every way, I couldn't’ love her more than I do, I know she will always be remembered and loved.

That experience has formed who I am today most and has made me feel so different about everything in life that I didn’t before, and made me think of things in an extremely different view now because, now I look and treat things more carefully than I did before. An example would be if I’m babysitting or looking after my cousins, I keep a closer eye on them to make sure they stay safe and keep them as healthy as I can. This has been the biggest thing that has ever happened to me.

Short story 1 summary

The short story I read was called "To Hell With Dying" by Alice Walker. This story started out about an elderly man named Mr. Sweet. Mr. Sweet lives on an old farm and he is an elderly man that is an alcoholic and plays guitar, but it seems that the kids parents like him and don't seem to mind their kids playing with him.

The kids love him and love to tickle him. They love to hear him play the guitar, and they know that the guitar means a lot to him. Every time he gets close to dying or gets real sick, the kids dad comes and brings his kids and the kids run and jump on him and their dad says " To hell with dying, man, the children want Mr. Sweet!"

They went off to college after a while. He was walking one day when, his family called and told him that Mr. Sweet hadn't been doing that well and as soon as he heard that, he told them he would get on the first flight down there. When he arrived at the airport he took the first flight, which was four hours.

Once he got to town he walking in, and usually he would jump on his lap and tickle him, but he was far too big now. So he went over to his bedside and told Mr. Sweet, "To hell with dying , man, the children want Mr. Sweet!" Usually Mr. Sweet would reach out his hand and start to open his eyes, but this time he just laid there, this time it was his time to go.

Reading week 2

This week I read about lots of drama, Andy's little brother hitting a home run at a baseball game, and Gerald having a crush on the new girl, Jalani who is also Keisha and Ronda's new friend. Keisha isn't on cross country anymore, but she still runs for them. So after running the new Coach Johnathan Hathaway that everyone thinks is so cute except for Keisha starts to argue with a student for being late to practice, but nobody thinks its only about being late because she is also cut on her neck and her arm. After yelling back and forth towards each other She stomps off into the woods.

reading week 1

This week I read about Andy just committing suicide and his little brother finding him. In the first chapter everyone is pretty sad about just losing Rob and now having to lose Andy. After the funeral and everything else going on Keisha, Andy's ex girlfriend asks Andy's little brother Monty to go to the picnic with her and he says yes. They went to the picnic and had a great time at the fire later that night.
